WiMAX Development in Asia November 10-16
November 14, 2008
- On November 12 Taiwan's HTC launched the HTC MAX 4G, its first dual-mode GSM/WiMAX mobile phone, according to TMCnet. The HTC MAX 4G is designed for Russian telecom operator Scartel and will be available on the company's Yota mobile WiMAX network. It is further reported that the HTC MAX 4G will automatically switch to Yota's mobile WiMAX network and activate the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) call if both the caller and the receiver are Yota subscribers. Otherwise, by means of a SIM card, the HTC MAX 4G supports GSM calls from any Russian operators.

- Taiwan's NCC (National Communications Commission) recently reiterated its opposition toward the merger between WiMAX licensees and other telecom operators during the network deployment phase, Taiwan's NOWnews reported on November 12. As per the NCC regulations, any telecom operator intending to invest in a WiMAX licensee is only allowed a share of no more than 15% in the latter's overall capital.
